Can you use a metal blade to cut wood?


In simple words. The answer is no. A blade designed to cut metal may not cut wood. But, there is little possibility that depends on factors. 

Regardless of the saws including a miter saw, Sawzall, and circular saws. For cutting metal, all blades have a high tooth density (14TPI to 26TPI). In short, the narrower the gaps between a blade’s teeth states it’s for cutting metal.

Can a blade for cutting metal also cut wood?

No, it will not. You should always use a blade meant to cut wood pieces, plywoods, and chipboard. Cutting wood with blades that are meant to cut metal most likely destroys the wood by burning it, or the blade itself gets damaged.

Moreover, a blade’s material is not the deciding factor. Blades for both wood and metal can be made from the same materials including (aluminum, carbide, and steel). Basically, their physical appearance matters the most, mainly the number of teeth a blade has. With larger teeth sizes, wood blades have fewer TPI (teeth per inch). In blades for metal, the size of tooths is smaller and the TPI is higher.

Why are metal blades not for cutting wood?

Metal blades don’t work on wood because metal is denser and unlike wood metals are not grainy and soft. The wood grains are the reason why blades with small teeth and higher TPI don’t work on them.

Why do metal blades not work for work is because metal blades will burn or bind in wood much more frequently than wood blades wood. With teeth smaller than 0.25 mm and a TPI higher than 10, cannot cut through wood. Several factors contribute to this, including grain clogging, chippy wood, and frictional heat.

Therefore, blades for wood have large teeth and lower TPI density that easily passes through a block of wood while cutting, without clogging up since grains don’t stick to the blade.

For thin wood, like plywood sheets, or chipboard, where chip clearance is less of a problem, it may work. A thicker and more grainy wood will negatively affect your experience.

What will happen if you cut wood with a metal blade?

When you use a blade designed for metal to slice through wood, this happens.

  • There will be a lot of friction and heat created by the high number of teeth and small gullets (spaces between the teeth).
  • The wood will be burned badly and this could overheat the blade and cause loss of temper if pursued long-term. 
  • The wood fibers will clog the blade teeth or knurling more quickly, and the blade will cut through the wood more slowly.

Why are metal blades not for cutting wood?

Higher TPI and the small size of the teeth is the reason why metal can not slice wood nicely. Woods are grainy, soft, and springy, so large teeth are required to slice them apart. In blades with small teeth, wood fibers will clog the blade teeth or knurling more quickly, causing damage to the blade or wood burning.
